5 Free Outdoor Activities to Enjoy this Winter
With the current economic climate, it is hardly surprising that many are searching for more affordable activities this wintertime. It’s important to remember that creating memories doesn’t have to involve spending your hard-earned money! There are many places to visit and activities to do that will help you keep track with your financial objectives, while creating lasting memories in the process.
Let’s delve into five free outdoor activities to enjoy this winter time.
1) Outdoor Skating Rinks
It’s the quintessential Canadian wintertime activity. In Ontario, whether you’re looking for a family activity or an activity to enjoy solely with that special person in your life, outdoor skating can be an activity that brings joy and lasting memories to all. There are rinks across the country offering free skating time during both the week and weekend making it the perfect activity for those hard workers looking for some fun in the winter sun. If you don’t have skates see what you can borrow from family and friends as most people have a pair or two kicking around. Also if you bring a thermos of hot chocolate you wont have to purchase any when it gets chilly.
2) Walk a Winter Trail
If you live in Ontario and haven’t yet experienced the many walking trails that traverse the majestic scenery, you’re missing out on many natural wonders. Winter trails can be lakeside walking paths or routes through the forest. It’s an opportunity to improve you physical health while discovering the many wondrous sites across Canada. And it costs you nothing! Just remember to plan your route and dress appropriately.
3) Go Ice Fishing
The traditional ice fishing trip will allow you to enjoy the Southern Ontario scenery while spending time with friends. For those who have the equipment, ice fishing can be completely free of charge across Canada’s lakes in wintertime. It’s an activity that many warm to from their first adventure on the frozen Canadian waters. If you don’t have the equipment maybe you have a friend or family member who does and you can go with them and learn the ropes.
4) Build a Snowman / Snowwoman / Snow-Family
When there is show outside it is a wonderful (and free) idea to enjoy what is right outside your front door. You can find old unused items around the house to decorate you snow creations and for families it is a great way to build teamwork and communication skills.
5) Go Birdwatching
Birdwatching is a wonderful treat in the wintertime as Ontario’s full plethora of winter wildlife can be found across Southern Ontario’s parks and lake areas. A fun activity for parents and children, or simply those who love the great outdoors, birdwatching can be a peaceful way to spend an afternoon during the cool winter months.
Keep your wallet at home and bring your spirit for adventure. You’ll never know what you might find in your local area for free if you don’t step outside and explore!
